Images from 16mm abord STAG-1
A month of hard-hitting attacks is recounted in these images, which were filmed by 16mm cameras aboard STAG-1 control aircraft. While the 16mm originals are black and white (here they have been tinted an appropriate shade of green) and badly overexposed, one can get a fair idea of Block’s effectiveness. Visible in the first image are the crosshairs a control pilot used to guide the TDR, which here flies towards an anti-aircraft position on the beach. In the second photo, a river and the jungle is clearly visible. Next shot shows a building and a bridge under assault; the white puffs are flak. In the final image, a TDR’s nose eye view as it dives on a Japanese gun emplacement (left of frame). A moment later, it was destroyed.
